The history of voting

Voting in America has a complex and evolving history that has significantly impacted its citizens. The right to vote has not always been universal in the United States. Initially, only white male property owners were allowed to vote, excluding women, African Americans, Native Americans, and other marginalized groups.

Over time, various amendments to the U.S. Constitution expanded voting rights to include African Americans (15th Amendment), women (19th Amendment), and 18-year-olds (26th Amendment). The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a landmark piece of legislation that aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote.
